מה לסדר

דברים עם תאריך יעד, כלל או זכאות ששווה לממש.

  1. Get recognised as a lone soldier, and save Merkaz Bodedim's number

Olim who came alone and whose parents live permanently abroad are recognised as lone soldiers, as are those whose parents moved abroad or are on a mission overseas for six months or more. Israelis without family support apply through the Ministry of Defense, ideally before enlisting. Benefits run through your unit's welfare NCO, the Mashakit Tash; for anything else, the IDF's lone soldier department, Merkaz Bodedim, answers 24/7 on 1111, or +972-3-5691000 from abroad.

  2. Check which aliyah grants apply to you: oleh, Garin Tzabar or Mahal

Olim who are lone soldiers get a monthly Ministry of Aliyah and Integration grant on top of army pay, but only if no more than five years passed between aliyah and the draft; a separate Ministry of Construction and Housing payment starts 13 months after aliyah. Neither applies to Mahal volunteers, who serve 18 months without making aliyah. Garin Tzabar participants make aliyah and spend three months on a host kibbutz before the draft.

  3. Put your own name on the lease to get the rent supplement

Lone soldiers who rent an apartment for their time off base get a rent supplement and an apartment-maintenance payment added to army pay. It is not automatic: upload a signed rental contract with your name on it to your Mitgaisim account, or give a copy to your Mashakit Tash. The rates are revised, so confirm the current amount with Merkaz Bodedim before you budget around it.

  4. Claim the arnona and electricity discounts

Soldiers in compulsory service who own or rent their home pay no arnona on up to 70 square metres of it, 90 if five or more people live there; living with parents does not qualify. Take your lone soldier certificate, army ID and lease to the municipality. The exemption continues for four months after release. Lone soldiers who rent can also ask the Israel Electric Corporation for 50% off the bill.

  5. Know the free housing: Beit HaChayal, Alach flats and kibbutz rooms

Lone soldiers can stay free at Beit HaChayal, the Soldiers' Welfare Association hostel, which has a Jerusalem branch, from three months before the draft until discharge, with breakfast and dinner served. The association's Alach apartments are also free and furnished, but must be left on discharge; arrange one through Meitav before the draft or your Mashakit Tash after it. Soldiers on closed bases can rent a kibbutz room through the Lone Soldiers Program.

  6. Look at the Lone Soldier Center's houses in Jerusalem

The Lone Soldier Center runs four houses in Jerusalem: Beit HaKerem, the largest, for about 50 men and women; Arnona, mainly for religious olim; and two smaller houses for religious men and women on King George. Rent matches the army's housing allowance and covers utilities, municipal fees, internet and basic food, with hot Shabbat meals cooked by local volunteers. Its drop-in centre is at 8 Dorot Rishonim, 02-502-2211.

  7. Ask for an adopted family for Shabbat and chagim

The Lone Soldiers Program will match you with an Israeli family that volunteers to adopt a lone soldier, from Friday-night dinners to a room for your time off base; you choose the level of observance, the area and how involved it is. Twice a year, before Rosh Hashanah and Pesach, lone soldiers also get holiday gift cards; your Mashakit Tash says where to collect them.

  8. Plan leave abroad, the flight home and your parents' visits

Special leave to visit family abroad is usually granted only after training. After eight months of service you can request a paid round-trip flight for it through your Mashakit Tash: two for combat soldiers, one for non-combat. When parents visit Israel you can get up to four days off with them during training and up to eight afterwards; Friday and Saturday may count. Parents abroad can call the Lone Soldiers Program's US line, +1 201-605-7440.

  9. Load your travel budget onto your choger

Soldiers' public transport is paid from a monthly IDF budget, loaded as stored value onto the choger through the Rav-Kav Online app or at a service station and valid on every mode nationwide. If it runs short, ask the person in charge in your unit for another load. After release, the Discharged profile on a personal Rav-Kav gives a year of free travel, with your ID and discharge certificate.

  10. Know who to call when it gets heavy

ERAN's emotional first aid line is free and anonymous: 1201 in Hebrew, *3201 in English, and WhatsApp on 052-845-1201. Nefesh B'Nefesh lists the IDF medical line, *6690, as the route to a free army mental health professional during service. The Lone Soldier Center funds therapy for soldiers in its programme, and NBN's Resilience Center, 02-302-7007, offers therapy to international lone soldiers after the army.

  11. Sort out Bituach Leumi and a health fund on release day

During compulsory service the Ministry of Defense pays your national insurance and the IDF provides your medical care, not a kupat cholim. On release, register with a health fund straight away. There is no contribution for the first two months if you have no income; after that a non-worker pays the minimum, NIS 266 a month in 2026. A month or more abroad must be reported to Bituach Leumi in advance, or health services are suspended on return.

  12. Use the release grant, the pikadon and the first-year rent help

The release grant reaches your bank within 60 days of discharge. The pikadon can be drawn for five years for study, training, driving lessons, a home, a business or a wedding, then the balance goes to your account on file. Discharged lone soldiers can also get up to NIS 12,000 towards rent in the first year and up to three months in a Soldiers' Home. Bituach Leumi pays NIS 11,461 (2026) for six full months of full-time listed 'vital work'.
