Old Jaffa and Jaffa Port

One of the oldest port cities in the world, an hour from Jerusalem, and a free day out. The municipality publishes an eleven-stop family walking route that starts in Abrasha Park at the stone gate, crosses the Wishing Bridge, drops to Jaffa Port, comes back up to the Ottoman clock tower and finishes in the flea market.

The walking route itself is free and self-guided from the municipality's own page, with stories and pictures for each stop. You only pay for food, the flea market and any museum you choose to enter. Parking is the main cost.

Paid car parks around the clock tower and the port; they fill up on Fridays and Saturdays. Coming by train and bus avoids the problem entirely.

The fast train from Jerusalem Yitzhak Navon to Tel Aviv HaHagana takes about 30 minutes, then a bus or a short taxi to the clock tower. By car it is about an hour on Route 1 and then south through Tel Aviv, and the last stretch is slow.

In July and August do the port and the sea breeze in the late afternoon rather than the alleys at midday; in winter it is one of the best rainy-season walks because you can duck into cafés.

- The flea market and most shops run Sunday to Friday, so a Shabbat visit is for the alleys, the port and the views.
- Come by train to Tel Aviv HaHagana; parking in Jaffa on a Friday is miserable.
- Stand on the Wishing Bridge, look out to sea and make a wish — the children will insist.
- Cobbles and steps everywhere: a baby carrier beats a buggy.
