Public transport stops before Shabbat. Buses and the light rail wind down on Friday afternoon, well before candle lighting, and start again after Shabbat ends. Check the last departure on Moovit before you rely on it; taxis and Gett run throughout.
Shops and the shuk close early on Friday. Supermarkets and Mahane Yehuda are packed from Thursday evening and most close two to three hours before candle lighting. A handful of convenience stores and non-kosher restaurants in the city centre stay open, and Saturday night reopening is fast once havdalah passes.
Erev chag works like Friday. The day before a festival follows the Friday rhythm, and in Israel festivals are one day, not two, so the calendar here already shows the Israeli dates. Yom Kippur is the one day when the whole city, roads included, falls silent.
