Ein Prat Nature Reserve (Wadi Qelt)

Judean Desert
The upper spring of Nahal Prat (Wadi Qelt), twenty-odd minutes from northern Jerusalem, where a year-round stream runs through a desert canyon past bathing pools, ancient aqueducts and the working Faran monastery. The classic short family outing is the walk from Ein Prat down the wadi.

חניה
Paved car park at the reserve entrance, included in the entrance fee. It fills early on Fridays and in chol hamoed; the access road is narrow with many turns, so a full car park means a long wait.
איך מגיעים
From the French Hill junction take the road to Pisgat Ze'ev, pass the Hizma checkpoint and continue east on Route 437 to Almon (Anatot). Enter the community, turn immediately south onto an unpaved road for about 500 m which then becomes paved. Drive slowly — many bends. No practical bus; take a car.

The longer walks down the wadi are proper hikes on rocky ground — fine for school-age children, hard work with a buggy. מקורה או בחוץבחוץ בשבת ובחגיםפתוח מתי הכי כדאיLate spring is the sweet spot — the stream is still strong and the desert has not yet turned into an oven. Autumn works too. Avoid midday in July and August, and stay out of the wadi entirely when flooding is forecast. נגישותPaved parking, a shaded picnic area on a paved surface, the stream reachable on a dirt trail with no stairs, a concrete observation deck and a toilet. Visitors with mobility impairments are advised to come with a companion.
טיפים מקומיים
- Pollution in Nahal Prat has closed trails downstream and banned entry to the water on one stretch — check the Parks Authority site first.
- Water shoes: the pool floors are rock and gravel.
- The access road from Almon is narrow and winding; go early and go slowly.
- There are no changing rooms — bring a towel poncho for the children.
- On days of extreme heat or flood risk the trails are closed outright.
